When and Why Clean a Cartridge Filter?

Like any type of pool filter, a cartridge filter gets clogged as it filters and collects dirt from the pool water. The more clogged it becomes, the less effective the filtration. During the swimming season, this type of filter requires 1 to 3 backwashes per week, depending on usage and the pool's exposure to the elements. When you notice that the water is no longer being drawn in properly (the water seems to stagnate in the skimmer) or, worse, that the suction hose tends to get pinched even though you have regularly cleaned the filter, it's time to replace it.

Hard water? You must use a water hardness stabilizer: Calcinex Pool. Cleaning with a garden hose helps remove larger debris (organic matter, hair).

To remove limescale, iron, and other mineral deposits from the filter, it is recommended to soak the cartridge in a solution of "Filtercleaner" or "Decalcit Filter." Let it soak for at least one hour. Always rinse the cartridge thoroughly with a jet of water before placing it back in the filter.

The frequency of filter changes depends on the length of the season, the pool's usage, the water temperature, and also the care taken with water treatment and filter cleaning. The more often you want pristine water, the more frequently you should change the filter. Start each season with a new filter. You'll save money because a clogged filter no longer allows water to pass through, and ultimately, it's the pump that suffers.
